Train collisions take priority
when Dalton gets the call.

Last year a freight train plowed head-on into a Metrolink train during morning rush hour, killing two passengers and injured 260 others in the regional commuter rail system's worst accident. The Metrolink train's three passenger cars were being pushed by an engine at the rear while being operated from a cab in the forward passenger car. A spokesman from Burlington Northern Santa Fe said the freight was en route from Los Angeles to Clovis, N.M. The train carried 67 loaded containers that came from Port of Long Beach. Southbound Metrolink 809 was traveling from Riverside to San Juan Capistrano on a route that has 12 trains

and 3,000 passenger boardings each day. The route is dispatched by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway. Train dispatcher's work very much like air traffic controllers. They have a screen in front of them where they can see train traffic for miles around. That's why this incident was such a puzzle and is still under investigation. Burlington Northern Santa Fe owns and maintains the stretch of rail where the collision occurred. The Burlington Northern called in Hulcher Services to clear and repair the tracks and upright the cars as the people were evacuated from them. We were called out by Hulcher Services to help with that chore.
