81-car Train Derails…
Causing Sticky Work on the Pass

Shortly after Dalton Trucking's Asset Manager received news of the derailment of an 81-car train at Cajon Pass, the phone rang. JIMCO Construction of Riverside, CA asked Dalton to assist in the messy clean up of derailed loaded tanker cars carrying a cargo of syrup. When we arrived, tanker cars lay strewn about. This train had collided with two locomotives and derailed. Thankfully, there were no injuries. The track involved was badly damaged. The most efficient method of railroad track repair was to replace the complete 40' section, by using preassembled sections called 'panels'. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) stores these panels for emergency use throughout the country in their main rail yards. We dispatched ten trucks with flatbed trailers to two BNSF yards, one in San Bernardino and the other in Oro Grande to pickup the panels.

Because Dalton has a large fleet, over 100 flatbed trailers, it was relatively easy for us to roundup the drivers and tractors to be on the job within hours with the replacement panels.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need fast and dependable help, call our toll free number (800) 333-2400. You can reach us 24 hours a day. For flatbed and lowbed assistance, ask for Matt Klenske at ext. 1560 or Frank Boughton at ext. 1563.
