Dalton Trucking, Inc. has delivered silica sand to La
Habra Products in Anaheim for over ten years using covered
dome hoppers. These covered dome trailers are set up to
haul granular, dry bulk products. They are some of the
less glamorous trailers we operate. They are essentially
bottom dumps with lids. Yet, because of their inherit
efficiency, they are very attractive to operate. This
design has been in use for over 50 years. The trailers
are light weight, yielding high payloads. In addition,
they are low maintenance with a minimum of discharge hardware
as compared to a pneumatic set up.

However, because of these attributes,
covered dome hoppers operate in a very competitive niche.
Rates are low and service demands high. Yet Dalton has
been successful with several local manufacturers, including
composite shingle producers, which are set up to receive
product from these trailers. Oglebay Norton Industrial
Sands in San Juan Capistrano is one of our prime shippers
and the supplier to La Habra Products.

They have recently added several major new improvements
to their plant, doubling the production capacity of
their screen house. The upshot of these changes has
been to increase the speed and quantity of sand being
processed. This Orange County plant started producing
in 1963 and has years of reserve deposits left. La Habra
Products, Inc. (maker of La Habra Stucco®) was established
in 1926 as a manufacturer of colored stucco and is recognized
today as the leader in the industry. They pioneered
the base and package system that reduced distributors'
inventory cost, and allowed a wide range of colors to
be readily available. La Habra has become the nation's
forerunner by developing new products, new formulations
and new systems.
